Profile of Jason Smith

Jason was born in sunny Weston-super-Mare under the birth sign of Aries on the 5th April 1970. Educated at Windwhistle Primary School and a Secondary education at Broadoak Comprehensive, Jason went onto Weston College to study Physical Education before being thrown out due to lack of attendance and eventually earning BTEC ONC National Awards in Building and Construction at Brunel Technical College in Bristol.

Jason’s career has seen him committed to job choices such as running a maintenance and decorating business to a Fault Technician at Tunstall Telecom working in Canada and North America, eventually setting up his own business as an on-line business marketing expert and Website developer for National and local businesses following working with non-other than Star Wars celebrities due to his skills in search engine optimising and marketing.

During his childhood Jason played football weekly for local clubs Westlands United and Saint John’s, trials with Bristol City and a football scholarship with Ajax in Holland. Jason eventually settled playing semi-professional Football for 12 years and with his home town club Weston-super-Mare AFC and Somerset Club Taunton Town F.C. The Sunday football was where Jason got most of his fun though and with local teams East Worle, Mr B’s and Frank’s Bar.

Throughout his footballing days he was lucky enough to meet some amazing and influential people, Alan Boardman (Jock), the late Bill Gardner and manager and groundsman Bob Flaskett (Flash) along with his Dad Chris who drove thousands of miles across the South West and opened up countless opportunities for Jason playing abroad in Holland and for some of the teams menntioned. Many of the local players Jason still gets to chat and catch up  with especially on the social website Facebook.

Jason was fortunate enough to be in the Taunton Town side that went on to play at the old Wembley stadium sadly losing in the Final 1-0 to Diss Town, the short spell at the club won Jason  place in the Premier Cup Final against Bristol Rovers, in the Rovers team was fellow local player Gareth Taylor who went on to play for the National team Wales and many Premiership sides.  Jason quit football at an early age of 30 to take up adventuring and travelling with the odd challenge and continues his sporting activities on a weekly basis, Tennis, Running, Trekking and the odd game of local Golf.

In the past 14 years since quitting football Jason has obtained licences to Scuba dive (P.A.D.I) and Mountaineering with the BMC (British Mountaineering Council) along with a National Athletics Membership with Weston AC running club..

On 1st June 2014 Jason completed yet another lifetime dream, after almost a year of planning since descending from the summit of Mont Blanc, Jason ran 7 Marathons in 7 consecutive days. Instead of running on 7 continents he opted for 7 charities, some personal charity choices and the others through a voting system on Facebook, helping to fundraise over £10,000 with fellow runners and friends.

Following in the footsteps of an adventurer such as Sir Ranulph Fiennes who has been an inspiration to Jason since reading the challenges and ventures over the past two decades.

Most of Jason’s Challenges didn’t begin until the age of 30 once he had retired from playing football. The first Challenge was one that is very popular on most peoples bucket list, to summit Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the Queen of Africa standing at 19,341 ft above sea level, therefore making it the highest free standing mountain in the world.

Other challenges followed such as running back to back marathons and then an opportunity to partake in a “Hands on the Car” sleep deprivation competition hosted by the car makers Renault. Venturing out on weekends became the norm along with long trekking holidays with the famous five group and Canadian friends.

The UK Three Peaks, Ten Tors Challenge, The Trotternish Ridge hike and the Inaccessible Pinnacle summit, Ben Nevis Winter climbs, Snowdon and Scafell Pike, The Tour Du Mont Blanc (TMB) and the summit attempts of Mont Blanc and going the extra mile in the Mendip Challenge along with many others.

Since his return from the Alps in France Jason took on one of the toughest lifetime Challenges yet, in May 2014 he run consecutive  “7 Marathons in 7 Days” pushing his body to it’s physical limits while using his “Mind Over Matter” to block out the pain during the endurance ultramarathon. His training began 9 months prior to the challenge and has been recorded as a weekly journal, including his training methods that helped with his 3 stone weight loss and maintaining fitness without injury.

Jason began raising awareness for many charities and during his challenges started fundraising, The PDSA, The Brittle Bone Society, The Down’s Syndrome Association, The MPS Society and The Weston Hospicecare have all benefited from his sponsorships. Running the 7 consecutive  marathons for 7 charities in his home County of Somerset with each of the chosen charities being Somerset based and each had a marathon dedicated to them for fundraising.

Jason is proud of his fundraising as he has always funded his own challenges at his own expense therefore each charity receives 100% of what is raised. With sponsor websites such as JustGiving.com it makes the collecting so much easier. In 2014 Jason was made an Ambassador for Bodyshox, who provide him with the required sports supplements and protein shake drinks to maintain fitness and energy.

Jason is fortunate enough to run his own business and therefore is able to take time out from family and for training as challenges such as Mont Blanc and training to run 7 consecutive marathons can take as much as 6-9 months of hard training and preparation of equipment.

Jason is a strong believer of local community, helping those that help you in many ways, large or small. Without the support and help of family, friends and local businesses certain challenges could not take place. If you can help Jason raise awareness of any local charity then he’d love to hear from you, he does enjoy a good chat after all.

He hopes to see you at the next Challenge ahead.
